Sharks, Crocs, Cougars and a little kayaking
The putin..

Thad looking good. For only boating for 5 months, he sure does have the nicest gear. He has on the pimpinShred Ready Tdub helmet, the new awesome Astral Green Jacket, the AT2 flexi paddle and he fits perfectly into the new Pyranha Karnali kayak. I respect the fact that he bought great gear even as he is learning. Less upgrading later...

Lisa seal launching in....

Thad has been working on his roll like there is no tomorrow. Here he demonstrates the adverse effects of bringing your head out of the water first.

I didn't capture the perfect roll demonstration by him right after this. I later asked him what his secret was to perfecting the roll in any situation. Especially this early in his kayak career. He said, Atom its really pretty simple, I'm terrified of sharks and so I just pretend that they are in every river I Kayak on. If I swim, I get eaten. So it makes me roll every time. He then told me about his favorite movie. Here is a preview of it..
After all the shark talk, I had to do some Bow Stalls...

Thad charging...

Lisa during the aftermath of a rare swim. I asked what the heck happened? Oh not much she said, I just thought I saw a Crocodile and so I freaked out and tried to ward it off with my paddle. Ahhhhh, Okay?

Lisa then confessed to me that she loved crocodile movies, but is totally scared of the actual creatures. This is her favorite Croc movie..
Back on track. Thad running Big Rock

Thad looking like he is training for the Middle Kings.

Lisa Training for the Micos en Mexico.

Lisa catching the Eddy at Sleeping Beauty

Thad same..

That guy Nate finally shows up.

Yup, that is Nate's tongue sticking out. I have about 50 shots of him surfing Sleeping beauty and his tongue is out in every shot. Lisa thinks it looks hot...

Thad getting some surf in..

Lisa one upping Thad (she actually made it in the hole)

Nate going for the elusive Helix.

Afterward I asked him what he thought about before trying such a hard move. Older women, he said without hesitation.
This is for you buddy..
Well an awesome day was had by all. I'm gonna end it with a plug for the NRS Toaster Mit. My hands are always freezing in the winter time (tried pogies and gloves-all of them). Tried these out today and was actually sweating. The paddle felt fine while wearing them. I'm sold using them for play runs and easier river running. I would not recommend them for creeking. Over and out. I'm off to Chile for 3 weeks where hopefully there are no crocs, sharks or aggressive cougars...

Mike Tavares-A Quick Recap of Rivers and Places – Spring 2008
Unpacking from a long drive to the Kern River Valley
Scouting Brush Creek from a distance

Blue Angles on Brush Creek, CA
With Kern Fest happening that weekend, we stayed and enjoyed the low key atmosphere and drank beers at Kern River Brewery with the best of them. After the Kern Valley started to get back to its slow pace, we headed for US 1 on the coast to hit a few surf spots along the way. On the list were a few top notch beaches without anyone in sight.
Sand Dollar Beach off highway # 1
We started at Jalama beach (which means Wind apparently) and made our way north through the famous coast line and found ourselves at our favorite beach named Sand Dollar Beach. With no one in sight except for seals and kelp, we had an epic surf session until we could barely hike back up the cliffs to the car.
A little surf @ Sand Dollar
After leaving the coast in Monterey, we headed back up to the mountains through Yosemite in the Merced River Valley. To our dismay, the river was running low, but the valley offered much more than just the river.
Yosemite
Next on the list was a short stretch in Reno filled with gambling, cheap hotels, and a play park with not much water. After a few sessions hitting bottom and trying not to break paddles, we left for the great state of Idaho. With both forks of the Payette running over 3,000 cfs, we had our work cut out for us. We spent a few days paddling the Payette and enjoying the hot springs and great camping in the area.

Dodging holes on the Payette
After leaving we decided to head over to Wyoming before heading back to CO for the summer. Jackson Hole offered a bit of play and some local creeky runs that were a little bit on the low side, but still good.
Big Kahuana on the Snake near Jackson Hole.
Looks like i will be walking this one, Big Falls on South Fork of the Payette, ID

The highlight of Wyoming was finding out by some locals that the area we were camping in was just opened for bear and wolf hunting season. After a few nights of hearing gun shots and paddling some decent whitewater we headed back to CO to prepare for an summer of big water. Stay tuned for the next post: Summer 08

Far Northern BC
After our trip down the Grand Canyon of the Stikine, we were able to get on a cool river just outside of Terrace, BC. Take a look on a map and find Terrace...it's out there. And the general feeling you get while paddling some of the local creeks is of isolation. This particular river or "creek", The Khtada River, required a half an hour ferry across the Skeena River and then hike up the creek for roughly 2 hours. This just added to the adventure of being "off the map" yet so close to civilization. Putting in on a high lake, the river takes a fast, low angled plunge down into the Skeena. This creates for a silly time of large slides. Although techniquely easy, letting your guard down will result in a knuckle scraping beatdown. Check the pics!
